California brain dump II

Friday, October 21st, 2005

Long(ish) time, no blog. This one’s gearing up to be just as rambling as the last, so fasten your seatbelts. Where to start…

I’m no longer sleeping on a couch and living out of a bag. i’m in the new apartment, and the moving guys showed up with my stuff… i think middle of last week. I’ve got almost no sense of time at this point. looking at the corner of my screen I see now that it’s the late middle of october. huh. anyway, all the stuff that used to so fully cram my apartment back in NYC seems… sparse at best in the big place Todd and I are now renting. As previously mentioned, we live on this artificial man-made lake. No pictures yet, we’re waiting til we’ve bought the ping-pong table for the dinning room before releasing the press kit.

The new job is a lot of fun. The code i’ve been working on for the past 2 1/2 weeks got checked into the main branch today, which is cool. Finding that hacking on C#/gtk# all day is, as expected, a lot of fun. We use bazaar at work, which definitely took some getting used to, but now that I have, I’m *thoroughly* enjoying it. Very refreshing after being stuck with CVS (ugh) and SVN (less ugh, but still blah) for so long. Hope that bazaar-ng takes it even further.

The russian chick whom i’ve now dubbed “UPEG” (you’ll have to ask me in person/via email/online what it stands for), has moved her news website previously hosted on my brother’s box to somewhere else, which pretty much is the final nail in the coffin on that relationship. Talk about terse emails in the DNS move discussion. If you’re reading this, UPEG (which I suspect you may be (seeing as I have yet to figure out how not to obsessively read your site, even though it’s painful to say the least)), YES HELLO.

So far I’m finding the california lifestyle both agreeable and horribly frustrating. I definitely dig how generally upbeat/nice most people I’ve met here are. The folks working in the toll boths are actually *nice*. At the same time, I had some guys scream “Freak!” out the window at me as I was walking to the grocery store the other day. I dunno if it’s the beard, the fact that I’m actually *walking* someplace, or what. Starbucks grows like a wart on the land everywhere here, but I’ve managed to find one donut/coffee shop run by this nice asian couple that make a mean iced mocha. I’ve been lazilly researching online what nice mid-price espresso machines are available now-a-days. Anyone got any suggestions?

I’ve gotta hold off on things like that for a bit still though, as I’ve still not gotten a car out here. The last foray a month ago when i was first here was amazingly unsuccessful, so I’m waiting til i’ve got a mother of a down payment saved up, then going car hunting again with as scary, sharp, and barbed car spear I can find. Hopefully the viking beard will help.

Looks like I’m not getting east for thanksgiving, but I’m definitely shooting for a week or so east during christmas time. It’s gonna be a busy one prolly, so all you east coasters, call me and schedule something.

Hoping to pick up paragliding while I’m out here. I did one or two lessons when I was in highschool, and loved it. Now seems as good a time as any to pick something like that up. Found a place south of here near San Diego that does lessons and stuff and looks good. Hopefully I can check them out early next spring sometime.

I think that’s enough brain dump for one night.
