stupid spain being across an ocean from me.

Monday, May 31st, 2004

so stacey leaves wednesday for spain. she’ll be gone for over 2 months. go ahead, ask me if this makes me happy. per stacey’s request, the link has been changed to “News.” Anybody suggest good calling cards/plans for overseas calls?

Spent the weekend up visiting the folks, and went to a frat party at which i watched a guy get beat down. not a pretty site. So odd, this weekend seemed to confirm for me the idea that frats are full of people i’d consider plagues of the earth, and yet zhen (cool gentoo dev from the midwest) is a frat brother, and cool as h*ll. who knows.

so, after the whole “guy living in our library” silliness, it finally kinda struck me that there’s this one guy who is always in the UC-70 computer lab here at stern. i mentioned this to my boss, and she was like “yeah, he’s always here!” most of the time i see him, he’s playing chess online, or doing something on the bloomberg terminal. he’s in here a LOT. so, i ask you the readers (i know there’s some of you out there!) to speculate on the guy’s story/history/situation in life. gimme the best you got.

cleaning day!

Sunday, May 23rd, 2004

i’m taking this day to relax and clean. pretty much the exact opposite ends of the “what to do with your sunday” spectrum. watched “igby goes down” again this morning… very cracked out and good movie. now to call my brother and harass him about why i haven’t gotten any mail since last night.

New home!

Monday, May 17th, 2004

that’s right folks, this baby has finally got a home of its own. mm… new URL goodness.

Random thought: when you say a “butt load” of something, do you mean as much as you could actually fit up your bum, or just the same volume of substance as your own *ss occupies… question for the ages right there.

weekends rule.

central park, the university diner, buying a great new CD, teaching stacey to throw a disc and play go, making waffles (anybody got “the joy of cooking”? i lost my recipe when i was mugged.), all-around just not thinking about school cause i’m done. yeah.

For those that think you understand me:

that’s right algebra. who’s my b*tch?

MWA HA HA!

Tuesday, May 11th, 2004

Well, for better or worse, my algebra takehome is handed in. That marks the last (in theory) work i will have done to finish my bachelor’s degree. yay me!

in nerd news, ximian opensourced connector today, the press release is here.

grrr.

So, the professor for the one class left i need in order to graduate wasn’t there today when i went to go ask him questions for our takehome final. i may in fact just lose it. tomorrow is not going to be fun. at all.

started working on Gst#, now that anoncvs is setup. Learned a little GAPI foo and bound the gconf stuff from gstreamer so you can poll for the default audio sink, etc, etc. pretty neat stuff. congrats again to all the mono folks. great work. At some point i may try to get muine working with a Gst# backend, it’d be a good exercise.

New mono is out!

Tuesday, May 4th, 2004

Mono Beta1 is out! spent the evening working on getting all the fun bits ironed out on monodevelop with todd, getting all the packages into portage, and then sending patches upstream to muine and to lewing to fix some of the GAC issues.

closer and closer.

i just sent in my honors paper finally, it was too short, but there’s not much i could do about it… kinda got hamstrung after spending ~2 weeks working on this GUI rotary thing only to be told it wasn’t “mathy” enough… grr. this means i’m 1/2 done with finals!

lewing gave me some love after i sent him a patch for f-spot. in case you don’t know who he is, he’s the guy reponsible for this guy. important day for the world? no. important day for me? no. am i gonna comment on it here anyway? yes.

Book blog randomness.

The instructions are: Grab the nearest book, open it to page 23, find the 5th sentence, post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.

“A few words (mostly verb forms) are stressed on the fourth-from-last syllable.”

Would you like to supersize that fried?

i’m so burnt out from doing this d*mn paper… i just want to be done with school. i didn’t leave my appartment at all today, even though the sun was so clearly making the day gorgreous… what a waste of a great day.

you’d think we’d start just throwing up.

Saturday, May 1st, 2004

man, it’s so nice that stacey and i can hang out for long periods of time and not end up just projectile vomiting over everyone and each other. i’d count that as a plus. We watched a few more scrubs episodes as usual, raided food emporium at 1am, and then hung out in the park this morning after making chocolate pancakes. all and all a good day so far.

i gotta continue working on this infernal honors paper tonight, instead of partying it up. very boring stuff, especially since after doing the presentation it feels very “after the fact”. gonna eventually put up the sources to the GTK# piece i wrote so random people can download it and yell at my horrible coding. the whole “GUI programming” thing is still pretty new to me, but it mostly makes sense. Here’s a list of projects i’d like to start once i’ve graduated and just have time to code and job-hunt:

  • GXWord - crossword puzzle app, including the ability to write directly on the puzzle for tablets, etc.
  • go-sharp - A GUI go program (in GTK# of course) that does go modem protocol (so it can jive with gnugo), and has sexy SVG stones, etc.
  • groam - the gnome dockapp i started for doing wireless config stuff. A la the OSX wifi applet thingy

Who knows how long these’ll take to really get going, but a few of them already have some good starts. time will tell
